Hispanic Heritage Month
Every year, between September 15 and October 15, American across the country celebrate the cultures, histories, achievements and contributions of Hispanics. Hispanics are defined as having ancestors from Spanish speaking countries, primarily in Latin America. The observation began as a single week under the presidency of Lyndon Johnson in 1968. It wasn't until 1988, under President Ronald Reagan that the celebration was expanded to cover a period of a month. It begins on September 15 to commemorate the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico celebrates their independence day on the 16th, Chile on the 18th, and Belize on the 21st.
It's one thing to recognize and celebrate each of these countries' independence, however, in order to truly appreciate the Hispanic community, we must also strive to understand what exactly makes them such a strong society. Most hispanics strongly believe that through hard work and with strong faith, you can achieve the impossible. This work ethic is instilled since childhood and it is driven by the commitment to family and faith. Additionally, it is through these commitments to family and faith, that the Hispanic community has been able to achieve the unthinkable. From prosperous Hispanics in politics, to successful careers in the arts and sports, and even impacting civil rights in the United States, the Hispanic community has not only survived, but flourished. Their achievements, despite their ongoing struggles, have continuously inspired others to strive for success and will continue on for generations to come. There's no question about how hard we work, how much we give, how strong we love, and how good we cook, so it's only fitting that we, the US Hispanic Contractors Association, celebrate our roots with an old fashioned barbecue.
Cada año, entre el 15 de septiembre y el 15 de octubre, los estadounidenses de todo el país celebran las culturas, historias, logros y contribuciones de los hispanos. Ser hispano es tener ancestros de países en que hablan español, principalmente ubicado en Latinoamérica. La observación comenzó como una sola semana bajo la presidencia de Lyndon Johnson en 1968.No fue hasta 1988, bajo el presidente Ronald Reagan, que la celebración se expandió para cubrir un período de un mes. Comienza el 15 de septiembre para conmemorar la independencia de Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. Además, México celebra su día de la independencia el 16, Chile el 18 y Belice el 21.
Una cosa es reconocer y celebrar la independencia de cada uno de estos países; sin embargo, para apreciar verdaderamente a la comunidad hispana, también debemos esforzarnos por comprender qué es exactamente lo que los hace una sociedad tan fuerte. La mayoría de los hispanos creen firmemente que a través del trabajo duro y con una fe firme, se puede lograr lo imposible. Esta ética de trabajo se inculca desde la infancia y está impulsada por el compromiso con la familia y la fe. Además, es a través de estos compromisos con la familia y la fe, que la comunidad hispana ha podido lograr lo impensable. Desde hispanos prósperos en la política, hasta carreras exitosas en las artes y los deportes, e incluso impactando los derechos civiles en los Estados Unidos, la comunidad hispana no solo sobrevivió, sino que también prosperó. Sus logros, a pesar de sus continuas luchas, han inspirado continuamente a otros para luchar por el éxito y continuarán en las generaciones venideras. No hay duda sobre cuánto trabajamos, cuánto damos, qué tan fuertes amamos y qué tan bien cocinamos, por lo que es justo que nosotros, la Asociación de Contratistas Hispanos de EE. UU., celebramos nuestras raíces con un “barbecue” tradicional.
